Custom E-commerce in Belgium: The Alternative to SaaS

Your e-commerce site costs you money every month, yet you do not own a single line of it. A custom-built site changes that equation: you own the code, you pay no commission on your sales, and from the second year on your selling tool costs you less than any rented platform. We proved it by designing and building, end to end, the online store of a Belgian B2B company in the workwear business.
The starting point is a scenario many SMEs know well. A WordPress site that aged gracefully, until the day it did not: plugins that clash, an update that breaks the cart page on a Friday evening, performance that erodes as the catalog grows. Or a Shopify bill that keeps climbing, month after month, with no one able to explain exactly why. And one day, the question always comes up: what if your e-commerce site truly belonged to you?
What SaaS Platforms Do Well, and Where They Stop
Let us be fair: the platforms on the market have genuine strengths. They would not have won over millions of merchants otherwise.
WordPress paired with WooCommerce is a vast ecosystem, an active community, thousands of extensions and a fast start for a first catalog. The trade-off shows up over time: the plugin jungle, where every added function is one more dependency, updates that are sometimes risky and can freeze everything, performance that degrades as extensions pile up, security to watch closely and hosting to manage yourself.
Shopify, for its part, launches a store in a few hours, with hosting included and payment working out of the box. That comfort has a price: a monthly subscription, a commission taken on every sale if you do not use their payment solution, customization bounded by whatever the platform allows, and above all a codebase that is not yours. Moving elsewhere becomes very hard, because you are locked into the ecosystem, from the theme to the paid apps.
PrestaShop offers more technical freedom and software you install yourself, but at the cost of real complexity, modules that are often paid one by one for each feature, and more limited support when a problem falls outside the ordinary.
What these three paths share fits in one sentence: you rent a tool, you never own your selling tool. The day you want to leave, change your logic, or simply negotiate, the balance of power is not on your side.
Our Approach: A Site You Own Outright
We take the problem from the other end. The site we build is entirely yours: you own one hundred percent of the source code. No lock-in, no closed ecosystem. The day you leave, you leave with everything, documentation included.
Under the hood sits a modern, fast and secure foundation. We build on a modern web architecture for the site itself, on a robust database for the catalog and orders, and on high-performance hosting that scales automatically. In plain terms: the page loads in under a second, security is handled by default, and the infrastructure absorbs the traffic spikes of a campaign or a trade show on its own, without you having to think about it.
The cost stays under control over time. No platform subscription, no commission on your sales, hosting you can share for a fraction of a Shopify plan. The upfront investment is higher, but once the site is in place your monthly cost is far lower, and it does not climb mechanically with your revenue.
What We Built for This B2B Client
Every building block answers a concrete business need. Here is what the store carries, without the jargon.
An intelligent product catalog. At the heart of the site is a multi-supplier synchronization system that automatically pulls in stock, prices and product sheets. Multi-brand management classifies each item by product type on its own. Advanced filters (size, color, brand, use, price) return instant results, and a fast internal search tolerates typos and offers suggestions as you type. The buyer finds the right item in seconds, which is exactly what you expect from a professional site.
A printable PDF catalog with QR codes. The site generates, on its own, a printable A4 catalog of more than six hundred pages. Every product carries a QR code that links to its online sheet. That catalog travels with the sales team at trade shows and client visits, or is attached to a quote: paper drives back to digital. It regenerates automatically with the latest products and up-to-date stock, with no manual layout at all.
Enterprise authentication and access. Professional clients get a secure login. Each company reaches its negotiated terms, its own pricing, its restricted catalog and its order history. Integration with the company's single sign-on (SSO) remains possible for accounts that require it.
A checkout and payment built for B2B. The order journey is designed for professionals: fast order, internal reference, purchase order. Payment is online, secure and compliant, and the shipping logic handles free-shipping thresholds, geographic zones and dispatch rules.
Supplier synchronization with no manual entry. An automatic bridge links the site to wholesaler catalogs, whether by API, FTP or structured files. The system imports sheets, photos, variants (colors, sizes), purchase and sale prices, and updates stock in real time or in scheduled batches. Nobody retypes a reference by hand: the system ingests, normalizes and publishes.
How Is a Custom Site Better Referenced Than a Platform Site?
This is where the difference truly shows. On a closed platform, your search visibility depends on what the tool is willing to let you set. On a custom site, every lever is in your hands, and we use them all.
The foundation is complete technical SEO. Every product, category or article page is optimized: titles and descriptions generated automatically, social sharing tags for clean previews on the networks, structured data that powers rich results in search engines, a dynamic XML sitemap, an optimized robots.txt, 301 redirects for legacy addresses, clean semantic URLs, and green web performance metrics. Every signal search engines expect is in place, without exception.
Measurement follows, with complete analytics tracking of the purchase journey, steerable without touching the code. The whole funnel is tracked, from the first click to purchase, with the key e-commerce events (viewing a product, adding to cart, purchase). You steer the entire tracking layer without ever touching the code.
On product distribution, the site feeds an automatic product feed to search engines and comparison shopping sites, with automatic price and availability updates. The same catalog is ready for advertising and social-network shops, with e-commerce event tracking, ready for campaigns on Facebook and Instagram. An online business listing and LocalBusiness markup round out local SEO.
Finally, the magazine is built into the site, not bolted on as a separate WordPress. Articles are optimized for search, with categories, tags, images and calls to action toward products, and automatic internal linking ties articles and product sheets together. The blog works for the store, not the other way around.
This complete approach to search is at the heart of our web production practice, and automating product feeds belongs to our work on workflow optimization.
The Real Cost, an Honest Comparison
Let us talk numbers, without dressing them up. The table below compares the three paths on what genuinely matters to an SME.
| WordPress + Woo | Shopify | AB-Arts custom | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | 3-8k EUR | 0 EUR (config) | 15-25k EUR |
| Monthly subscription | ~50-150 EUR | 79-299 EUR/mo | ~20-50 EUR |
| Sales commission | 0% (gateway ~1.5%) | 0.5-2% + gateway | 0% (gateway ~1.5%) |
| Annual cost (excl. dev) | 600-1800 EUR | 950-3600 EUR + commissions | 240-600 EUR |
| Code ownership | Partial | No | 100% |
| Migration | Painful | Very hard | Free |
| Advanced SEO | Plugins | Limited | Native, custom |
The message comes in two beats. Yes, the upfront investment is higher on a custom site. But from the second year on, the total cost drops below that of a rented platform, and the gap widens every year, especially when your sales rise and the commission follows. In the end, you do not just pay less: you own your selling tool.
Why Work With AB-Arts
We are a Belgian agency based in Braine-le-Chateau. In practice, that means a single contact in your time zone, in your language, reachable and available, with no lag and no barrier.
Our technical expertise is sharp: modern web architecture, robust databases, automation, and generative AI where it adds real value. Above all, our approach is complete. Development, design, SEO, analytics and advertising: one contact for the whole thing, rather than three vendors passing the buck. Maintenance and improvements are continuous, and the transparency is total: the code is yours, the documentation is handed over, and you depend on no one to keep your site alive.
Your Site Is Not a Cost, It Is an Asset
A rented platform stays an expense that restarts every month. A site you own is an asset that gains value, a selling tool that belongs to you and works for you. Your e-commerce site is not a cost, it is an asset: have it built as one.
If you sell online and want to stop renting your tool, let's talk about your project. A first conversation is enough to ask the right questions and scope a store that will truly be yours.
